Description
A red whale passes between the columns of a temple that is also the sea, while two sorceresses in carmine gowns steer its flight with sparkler wands — myth turned circus, circus raised to myth. Among several slender brass columns set upon a violet-and-blue sheet of water stand two women in long bright-red gowns with ragged schlagmetal hems and red turbans on their heads; each holds aloft a thin glowing wand; above them, threading between the columns, soars an enormous red-and-silver humpback whale with golden lines along its belly.
