Description
A woman walks one of the water lilies out of Monet's painting — red as a counterpoint to the pond's green, the lily as a stolen fragment of someone else's dream. A figure in a long burgundy silk gown with a spreading train stands with her back to us before a large canvas of water lilies; her red hair is gathered in a bun. Behind her, in her lowered hand, she holds a single pink water lily on a long stem — the very one that, moments before, must have been floating on the painted water. The gallery background stays muted, almost monochrome, so all the colour energy collects in the dress and in the stolen lily.
